The Spirit of God was seen to descend upon Jesus in the likeness of a dove. The Baptist preached that the ax was laid at the root of the tree, and if it does not bear good fruit it will be chopped down and cast into the fire. Heavenly attendants wait nearby with fresh garments to clothe the King. Jesus stands in the mouth of the Jordan, possibly the lowest point of elevation in the world. The last prophet of the Old Testament baptizes Jesus although he would much rather receive baptism from him. Jesus stands in utter humility wearing only a waistcloth, his hand raised to bless the human race.
